The Taranaki Secondary School Ki o Rahi Regionals were held on Wednesday 7th August 2019 at Manaia Domain in Manaia, South Taranaki.
15 teams entered the competition from all around Taranaki with 5 teams from 3 different schools in an all boys grade and 10 teams from 6 different schools in the mixed grade.
Francis Douglas Memorial College won the boys grade and Patea Area School were the champions of the mixed grade, Patea Area School competed at the 2019 Nationals in April and would of picked up some strong experience. They will again qualify for 2020 Secondary Schoo Nationals so we hope to see them in the Far North next April.
Event organiser Larnee Wallace from the Taranaki Secondary Schools Sport Association said that “It was a great event. It was great to see so many kids enjoying themselves and competing with smiles on their faces. I would like to extend my thanks to all of the volunteers who refereed, coached, and helped out in the running of yesterdays event. It would not have been successful as it was without your help. A special thanks our four referees who travelled all the way from Turangi to officiate as well.”
Awesome to see different regions supporting one another when it comes to Ki o Rahi, we caught up with one of the referees who made their way from Turangi, Roera Hartley of Tuwharetoa Sports to find out his thoughts on the day.
Roera was positive about the day saying “It was a mean experience, there’s lots of potential there and in a few years with some good knowledge I could easily see them as one of the best regions in the country.”
