On Tuesday 19th March on a beautiful day at Tongariro School in Turangi the 2019 Tuwharetoa Secondary School Ki o Rahi Regionals took place.
Teams came from all round with Tongariro School, Te Kura o Hirangi, Tarawera High School, Taumarunui High School and Te Kura o Ngapuke all taking part with most schools having two teams entered in the tournament.
The tournament was run by Tuwharetoa Sports and the day went smoothly, even a fire drill didn’t stop the play on the day.
In one semi-final Te Kura o Hirangi played and beat Taumarunui High School, in the other Te Kura o Ngapuke defeated Tarawera High School. Both games were of high standard and intensity with all teams wanting to make their claim as Tuwharetoa champions for 2019.
Tarawera played Taumarunui for 3rd and 4th with Tarawera winning and gaining the opportunity to attend the 2019 NZ Secondary School Ki o Rahi Nationals. Taumarunui were unlucky, they played really well throughout the day.
1st and 2nd was played between two small yet amazing Kura - Te Kura o Hirangi and Te Kura o Ngapuke with Te Kura o Hirangi having the edge in this game but only by a small margin.
Tarawera, Ngapuke and Hirangi all advance to the 2019 NZ Secondary School Ki o Rahi Nationals being held in Hastings in just under a month’s time.
Shout out to Roera Hartley and his team for the awesome day! There is definitely a strong passion for Ki o Rahi in Tuwharetoa and it’s really on the back of a lot of the mahi that Roera, Tuwharetoa Sports and the young coaches involved with the teams. Nga mihi tino nui ki a koutou!
