Matariki Kī o Rahi ki te Tai Tokerau
Ngāti Hine Health Trust are one of the organisations that help out with Kī o Rahi in Te Tai Tokerau. We caught up with KC Maaka from NHHT to hear about a recent Matariki Kī o Rahi Event they helped to run:
Things have been full on for us and now we’ve returned to our normal mahi after two years deployed in the covid 19 space. Our Matariki Kiorahi Event went well and the weather was amazing given the weather we’ve had.
8 schools attended from:
· Te Kura O Waikare
· Te Kura O Taumarere
· Kaareti O Peowhairangi – Bay of Islands College
· Kaareti O Okaihau – Okaihau College
· Springbank School
· Mangakahia Area School
· Paihia School
· Kawakawa School
We had six teams in the High School grade and five in the Intermediate grade. The event was focused on Matariki with emphasis on Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Matauranga and not so much competition.
We had a Whakatau keeping in sync’ with tikanga then got on with performances consisting of a Kapa Haka item or school theme song which was optional. We provided wai and a sausage sizzle as well so our whanau didn’t go hungry throughout the day.
Overall, everyone enjoyed the day and ultimately, Matariki and Kiorahi were winners on the day.
