2021 Te Awakairangi ki te Whanganui a Tara Secondary School Kī o Rahi

Nau mai e hine, e tama kia tomo atu ai tātou ki te whare tapere

Kia nanao atu ai tātou ki ngā taonga tuaukiuki

Kia kawea anō tātou e te rēhia

Hui ē! Taiki e!

2021 what a year! Covid saw the cancellation of a number of tournaments around Aotearoa. This included Te Whanganui a Tara regional Kī o Rahi qualifiers for nationals. However, our rohe were fortunate enough to run a weekly senior and junior competition in place of the tournament. The weekly tournament was run under the strict requirements of Covid with no spectators. Thankfully, we saw new schools embrace our beautiful taonga tākaro for the first time and we at Te Kura Matua o Wainuiomata have integrated Kī o Rahi into our junior and senior curriculum of the kura. Kī o Rahi looks promising in Te Whanganui a Tara and Te Awakairangi this year and for many years to come. The 2 venues for both Junior & Seniors competitions were held at Mana College (Wellington comp) & Te Kura Matua o Wainuiomata / Wainuiomata High School (Hutt Valley comp).

The following schools took part:

  • Mana College

  • Te Kura Māori o Porirua

  • Te Kura Matua o Wainuiomata

  • Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awakairangi

  • Hutt Valley High School

  • Taita College

  • St Bernard's College

  • Tawa College

  • Kāpiti College

Te Whanganui a Tara & Te Awakairangi qualifier tournament will take place Week 3, Thursday 17th of Feb in Tītahi Bay, Porirua.
